Disrupting the Financial Boys’ Club — One Laugh, One Learning Lab, One Life-Changing Plan at a Time
An Interview with Lisa Brumm, CEO of My Financial Girlfriend
What if learning about money felt like hanging out with a girlfriend who gets it—and who happens to be a powerhouse financial expert?
That’s exactly the experience Lisa Brumm brings to the table. As the founder and CEO of My Financial Girlfriend, Lisa is on a mission to make money approachable, accessible, and even (gasp!) fun—especially for women, BIPOC communities, and LGBTQ+ individuals who have long been overlooked in traditional financial spaces.
We caught up with Lisa to talk about her newest initiatives, the importance of community-based money education, and how she’s turning everyday financial literacy into a movement.
From the Pearl District to Pandemic Pivots
Before COVID, Lisa was juggling it all—running a physical office in Portland’s Pearl District, hosting community movie nights and cooking classes, and supporting clients through one-on-one consulting.
When the pandemic hit, she did what so many women entrepreneurs did: she recalibrated. With her team’s blessing, Lisa embraced a solo path, leaning deeper into her calling. That’s when the seeds for her now-thriving GF Talks Learning Lab were planted.
The Learning Lab: Netflix for Your Money
Imagine a safe space where anyone—yes, anyone—can ask “embarrassing” money questions without judgment. That’s what the Learning Lab offers. For just $11 a month, members gain access to a library of bite-sized financial workshops covering everything from budgeting basics to debt payoff hacks.
“It’s like Netflix for your money,” Lisa says, with a laugh. “We make it educational, a little entertaining, and totally shame-free.”
Topics are built around real life: paying off debt, handling uneven income, understanding 401(k)s, even why women pay more for deodorant—and how that ripples into long-term financial inequity. Lisa is determined to bring these conversations into the light.
“No Shame Zone” Conversations
Lisa is bold in her critique of the financial industry—and with good reason. “Only 24% of financial advisors in the U.S. are women. And the systems aren’t designed for the rest of us,” she says.
Her approach? Community education. Humor. Real talk. She creates “no shame zones” where people can ask anything, feel seen, and walk away with a plan.
And it works.
Lisa shared one of her favorite success stories—helping a woman in her 30s pay off $45,000 in credit card debt while finding $400 in monthly cash flow without sacrificing her lifestyle. They laughed, they cried, they celebrated. “It’s like solving a Rubik’s Cube,” Lisa explained. “One little twist can unlock everything.”
What’s Next for My Financial Girlfriend
Lisa’s entrepreneurial spirit isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Upcoming expansions include:
-
Expert Series: Featuring attorneys and tax pros to tackle wills, trusts, tax code changes, and legacy planning—state by state.
-
New Workshop Topics: Covering everything from self-employment finances to generational wealth.
-
A Financial Coloring Book: Yes, really. This creative new tool will help families learn financial basics together, one fun page at a time.
Whether you're curious about investing or just trying to stop dreading your bank statement, Lisa and her team are building the community you’ve been missing.
Final Word
Lisa Brumm isn’t just teaching people about money—she’s flipping the script entirely. With heart, humor, and hard-earned wisdom, My Financial Girlfriend is more than a business—it’s a movement.
